My workspace is full of cameras; some are very old, others are 20th century and they all make traditional photographs with silver-based photographic chemistry.
We will make one-of-a-kind portraits using a large wood and brass camera made in 1890. You can watch the images appear in the darkroom under a red photographic 'safe light'.
You will see the photographs the same day and can take them home with you (although I do prefer to send them on later, if possible, when they are thoroughly dried and flat)
A session usually lasts about 3 hours, perhaps longer with 2 people.
Anyone who would like to experience the way photographs were made between 1860 and 1995. This is slower photography! We will work together to make 21st century portraits using 19th century equipment and learn a lot about photography along the way.
My clients are individuals, couples, friends and young people over 12 who have an interest in traditional photography and the social history it reveals.
The photographs we make do not have digital equivalents, unless we decide to scan them. The prints will last, and be accessible without technology, for many, many decades to come.
With younger photographers, who are not usually ready for the darkroom, we make instant colour pictures using a big camera. Lots of fun and faster results.
Portrait sessions start at £75 for one person
